The NBA’s most successful franchises including the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics

The history of the NBA was laden with dynasties up until the recent era of relative parity in the league.

With the draft system, salary caps, and other measures working to ensure that no team consistently dominates the league over a prolonged period, all NBA franchises have gone through highs and lows.

The league has also seen expansion over the years and has evolved into a product with 30 participating franchises today, having started with just 11 franchises in 1949.

Further expansion has been suggested, and soon the league could see 32 franchises competing for the title. This poses an additional challenge to the status quo and opens questions regarding the fates of the existing franchises heading into a changing ecosystem.

At this stage, with the future of franchises being ever so uncertain, we run it back and explore the history of individual franchises to rank the top ten NBA franchises based on their overall success in the league.

#10. Houston Rockets

Introduced to the NBA in 1967 as the San Diego Rockets, the now-Houston Rockets have been a key part of the NBA narrative from the late 70s when they acquired legendary centre Moses Malone in a trade.

The most successful era for the Rockets, however, came after their selection of Hakeem Olajuwon with the No.1 pick in the 1984 NBA draft.

The Olajuwon-led Rockets won back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, and despite employing the likes of James Harden, Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, and Chris Paul, have failed to return to NBA supremacy since.

However, they have mounted serious title challenges, particularly during the James Harden era, and presently boast one of the most talented rosters in the league.

Their two championships, four Western Conference titles, and nine division titles, combined with their ability to avoid long periods of despair, land them in the top ten on this list.

#9. New York Knicks

The Knicks may not have seen championship success in over 50 years, but no list of historically successful NBA franchises can be made without the most glamorous franchise in the league.

With their home court deemed the “Mecca of Basketball”, the Knicks have historically attracted stars, and the legacy of Madison Square Garden alone suffices to propel them up a few spots in any such list.

The Knicks have also been an ever-present feature of the NBA and have two championships, four Eastern Conference titles, and eight division titles to show for their efforts.

Despite poor ownership derailing them on multiple occasions in recent years, the Knicks find themselves relevant once again as a contender in 2025 and are well-positioned to build on their past glory.

Success isn’t always measured in trophies, and the Knicks’ star-studded array of loyalists in Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, and Timothée Chalamet, combined with their raucous home support, also stands for their success as an NBA franchise as old as the league itself.

#8. Miami Heat

The Miami Heat and their “Heat Culture” stand as a blueprint for expansion franchises on how to overcome historical disadvantages to climb the ladder of success.

Despite only joining the NBA in the 1988-89 season, the Heat are already among the most successful franchises of all time and are an epitome of stability in a fast-moving league.

Headlined by the efforts of “The Godfather” Pat Riley, the franchise is already home to three NBA championships, seven Eastern Conference Titles, and 16 division titles.

After their era of success with the LeBron James-led “Heatles”, the Heat quickly rebuilt themselves as the grittiest underdog in the league and firmly established themselves as one of the best-run NBA teams.

With the foundations being laid for their next rebuild, all NBA fans await to see how the Heat climb back up, as they build on their reputation of never settling as a bottom dweller in the league.

#7. Detroit Pistons

Prior to their comeback season in 2024-25, the Pistons were truly at their lowest point, with their 14-68 record in 2023-24 marking an all-time low for the franchise.

However, this must not take away from their historic success and their status as the franchise that disrupted dynasties in the past and cemented themselves as perennial villains in NBA history.

The Pistons first climbed to the top of the NBA in an era dominated by the dynasties of the Celtics and Lakers, and were the biggest obstacle on the way for Jordan’s Bulls in the late 1980s.

They repeated their trend of bothering dynasties as an underdog in 2004, stunning the Kobe Bryant – Shaquille O’Neal-led Lakers and winning the NBA championship as a team with no superstars.

The Pistons will always be the “Bad Boys” of the NBA, and their identity will forever be embraced in the Motor City alongside their three NBA titles, five Eastern Conference titles, and 11 division titles.

#6. Philadelphia 76ers

Presently, the Sixers have gained notoriety for their failure to get over the line, failing to even make it to the Eastern Conference Finals for over two decades despite having star-studded rosters.

The past, however, has been kind to the Philly faithful, who enjoyed NBA success in three different decades with some of the giants of the game representing them at the peak of their success.

The Sixers have won three NBA championships, five Eastern Conference titles, and 12 division titles in the past, with the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson leading the line for them.

Ever since the glory days of Iverson, the Sixers have constantly been made a mockery of, with “The Process” under Sam Hinkie representing the lowest of lows.

Instability and a failure to capitalise on opportunities may define the modern version of the franchise, but there’s enough in the past to see them well placed in these rankings.

#5. San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs defined success as an organisation in their Gregg Popovich era and defied NBA trends for prolonged success, thereby claiming a place amongst the five greatest franchises in NBA history.

Under Coach Popovich, the Spurs maintained a record of at least 50 wins a season for 18 consecutive seasons from 1999-2000 to 2016-17. No franchise has even come close to this feat in league history.

During this run, the Spurs added five championships to go with six Western Conference titles and were widely regarded as the best-run franchise in the NBA.

Prior to this run, which commenced with them drafting Tim Duncan in 1997, the Spurs were a relatively successful team that didn’t have much silverware to show for.

However, a two-decade run as the NBA’s premier franchise was enough to elevate them to historically vaunted company.

#4. Chicago Bulls

The Bulls’ run as the dynasty of the 1990s is enough to catapult them to the higher echelons of success among NBA franchises.

Spearheaded by arguably the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan, the Bulls claimed six NBA championships in the 1990s, including two three-peats interspersed by Jordan’s baseball hiatus.

This run represented a level of success the franchise had never tasted and has failed to replicate since.

The Bulls have never made the NBA Finals without Michael Jordan or Scottie Pippen being a member of the team.

A brief rise in the early 2010s under Derrick Rose represented hope, but injuries soon derailed any expectations, and the Bulls have been stuck in mediocrity since.

#3. Golden State Warriors

The “Hamptons 5”, the “We Believe” Warriors, “Run TMC” – is there any other franchise with as many iconic NBA teams from history?

The Golden State Warriors owe most of their championship pedigree to the Steph Curry era starting in the 2010s, but the franchise’s success dates back to the inaugural season of the NBA.

The Warriors also hold the record for having the best regular season team of all-time, with their 73-9 record from 2015-16 standing tall as one of the toughest NBA records to beat.

In the modern era, they will be remembered as the team that revolutionised basketball with their early weaponisation of the three-point shot and will be immortalised as the team that changed the game.

Such a reputation, combined with their record of seven championships, seven Western Conference titles, and 12 division titles, makes their position in the rankings a no-brainer.

#2. Boston Celtics

Look away, Celtics fans!

Yes, it is true that the Boston Celtics have won the most number of championships in NBA history with 18.

Their championship run in 2024, led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, helped them break the tie with the Lakers, who caught up with the Celtics in 2020.

However, taking away their era of dominance under Bill Russell, where they won 11 championships in 13 years, their success has been intermittent and spread out over periods mired by disappointment.

Regardless, the Celtics remain one of the greatest franchises of all time, and their recent success indicates a promising future where they could stake a stronger claim for the top spot as the most successful NBA franchise ever.

#1. Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers are the only team in NBA history to feature in the NBA Finals in every single decade since the inception of the league.

The allure of La La Land has proven time and again to be unparalleled, and superstars flock to the Lakers in every decade, giving them a chance to compete time and time again.

When things have looked bleak, help has inevitably come in the form of the biggest stars on one too many occasions, and the Lakers have climbed back from unenviable positions, much to the chagrin of opposition fans.

The Lakers have 17 NBA titles, 19 Western Conference Titles, and 34 division titles to their name, capturing what it takes to stand tall as the most successful franchise in NBA history.

With Luka Doncic and LeBron James at the helm, expect the Lakers to add to their tally soon and consolidate their standing as they continue to deal in the currency of success.
