Three teams that Giannis Antetokounmpo could be traded to, and why the Atlanta Hawks are sneaky contenders

Two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo could be on the move, as reports about his Bucks future develop.

Antetokounmpo, who won the championship with the Bucks in 2021, has been reportedly thinking over his potential departure, and according to NBA Insider Chris Haynes, Antetokounmpo was unhappy with the Bucks about how they waived the injured Damian Lillard.

If the nine-time all-star were to be traded, it would reshape the entire landscape of the NBA, but not every team has the capital required to make the move.

Here are three teams that could create a package for Antetokounmpo.

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are in a unique position among teams in the league. Not only do they have a roster with notable names and desirable talent, they also have 10 first round draft picks in the next five years.

They could put together a valuable trade package for Antetokounmpo which would allow the Bucks to jumpstart their rebuild around the Spurs’ young talent, such as this year’s number two pick Dylan Harper and last season’s rookie of the year Stephon Castle.

That would pair Antetokounmpo with what looks to be a future generational talent in Victor Wembanyama, making for one of the most formidable frontcourts the NBA has ever seen.

Not only would that position the Spurs to compete for a championship from day one, but the move would also aid Wembanyama’s development in the third year of his young career.

New York Knicks

The New York Knicks have been mentioned in the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes forever, and for good reason. The 2025 Eastern Conference Finalists have the pieces to give up, a host of draft picks, and a superstar that complements him in the backcourt.

To bring in an NBA all-time great, you can expect to lose almost the entire core of your team. That means Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, Miles McBride and Mitchell Robinson would likely have to go, including next year’s Washington Wizards pick and some future draft picks too.

It is probably the biggest haul of players and picks the Bucks can get in return, setting them up to win some games next season and removing the need to tank. The Wizards will do that for them.

Meanwhile, Antetokounmpo alongside Jalen Brunson is a mouth-watering prospect, and in the weaker Eastern Conference without Jayson Tatum or Tyrese Haliburton at play, they could make a real run at the title.

Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks can offer the Milwaukee Bucks something that no other team in the NBA can – a reward for being bad.

The Hawks trade with the New Orleans Pelicans on draft day earned them one of the most valuable pieces of trade capital in the NBA. They fleeced the Pelicans for a 2026 unprotected first round pick, which will be the best pick between the Pelicans and… the Bucks.

In simple terms, if the Bucks are bad next year (which they would be without Antetokounmpo), that pick becomes incredibly valuable. And since Milwaukee do not have their own first round pick next year, a trade with the Hawks is the only way that they can effectively tank in 2026.

Jalen Johnson, who makes $30 million a year, can serve as an effective salary match, and Atlanta can also put young star Dyson Daniels on the table to bring Antetokounmpo to Atlanta.
