Andy Murray emerged on the Grand Slam scene with a stunning run to the Wimbledon third round in 2005.

The then-19-year-old shocked two tennis stars before succumbing to former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian.

Murray suffered defeat to Nalbandian after going two sets up as the Argentinian showed his experience at SW19.

Murray’s first-round victory marked his debut Grand Slam win, and it came against a star who caused an incredible upset just three years earlier.

Andy Murray’s first Wimbledon victory came against George Bastl

Murray took to life at Wimbledon incredibly well as he came up against wild card George Bastl on court two.

The Scotsman picked up a straightforward three-set victory over the Swiss star, winning 6-4 6-2 6-2 against the much more experienced player.

Bastl had history with Wimbledon too, providing one of the biggest shocks the Grand Slam has ever seen in 2002.

Bastl stunned seven-time Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras in the second round of the competition, beating the American great in five sets.

It marked Sampras’ last ever appearance at Wimbledon as he retired later on that year with 14 Grand Slam wins.

Murray and Sampras never crossed over in their tennis careers, but they’ll always be intrinsically linked by the Swiss former World No. 71.

Wimbledon 2005 also saw Novak Djokovic debut

2005 marked a slight changing of the guard in tennis as Murray was not the only future great to make his debut.

Novak Djokovic also made his debut at SW19, reaching the third round of the competition just like Murray did.

Djokovic defeated Juan Monaco and Guillermo García López, before losing to Sebastien Grosjean in four sets.

The Serbian would win the entire tournament just six years later, while Murray would have to wait a further two to win his first Wimbledon in 2013.
