Carlos Alcaraz avenged his Wimbledon final defeat by toppling Jannik Sinner in the Cincinnati Open final.

Alcaraz and Sinner are in a race for World No. 1 heading into the US Open, with the Spaniard in with a shout of ending the Italian’s monster reign.

Sinner hadn’t beaten Alcaraz on hard-court since 2023 and the World No. 2’s incredible run continued in Cincinnati.

The star picked up another lucrative prize after winning yet another tournament in 2025.

Carlos Alcaraz scoops $1,124,380 after Cincinnati Open win

Alcaraz picked up another six-figure prize at the Cincinnati Open after his straightforward victory over Sinner.

The World No. 2 picked up $1,124,389 and 1000 ranking points for winning the penultimate tournament before the US Open.

Sinner, meanwhile, earned $597,890 for his final place, which will soften the blow from his ninth defeat to Alcaraz.

The Italian appeared to be suffering from an injury from the outset of the final and never had any answers for Alcaraz’s play.

Currently, Sinner and Alcaraz are set to play the US Open Mixed Doubles tournament on August 19, but that looks very unlikely at this point.

What does this mean for Carlos Alcaraz’s quest for World No. 1?

Alcaraz is just 1890 points away from Sinner’s World No. 1 spot, and can overtake the Italian at the US Open.

The Spaniard is only defending 50 points at the US Open thanks to his second-round exit in last year’s event.

That means Sinner could lose his World No. 1 status if he suffers an early exit, which is likely due to the Italian’s current status.

Sinner retired from the Cincinnati Final after just five games, although it’s not yet clear if he’s injured or ill.
