Rafael Nadal’s incredible success was foreshadowed when he defeated a former Wimbledon champion as a teenager.

Nadal was an inspired teenager who was often tipped to become an exceptional talent on the ATP Tour, but no one could predict how good the Spaniard would become.

The Spaniard won 22 Grand Slam tournaments across his storied career, including Nadal’s favourite, Roland Garros, in 2006.

A tennis veteran saw first-hand just how good Nadal was when he shockingly lost to him as a 14-year-old.

Pat Cash lost to Rafael Nadal during a 2001 exhibition match

Cash played a teenage Nadal in an exhibition match in Mallorca after Boris Becker pulled out of the match.

The former Wimbledon champion was shocked by just how good Nadal was as the legendary Spaniard actually beat the Australian.

Nadal picked up the victory in three sets, much to the dismay of Cash and the hilarity of the Spanish crowd.

“I thought, ‘Jeez, this kid is good’,” said Cash in an interview with Control the Controllables back in 2023. “I thought any other kid would choke in that situation but he didn’t.”

“I’ve got to say I was a little bit embarrassed by the whole thing,” added Cash. “I went back in the locker room and the guys just shook their heads and said, ‘You just lost to a 14-year-old’.”

Cash revealed that Nadal’s incredible success on a tennis court reduced his embarrassment over the years.

“I was embarrassed for a few years but after 14 French Opens, I’m not so embarrassed,” joked Cash on the podcast.

Just four years later, Nadal would pick up the first of his 22 Grand Slam tournaments at the 2005 Roland Garros.

Rafael Nadal reunites with Roger Federer to play different sport

Nadal and Roger Federer had one of the most iconic rivalries in tennis history, but the two men share a bond away from the court.

Since both men retired, they are often spotted together at events, which brings a huge amount of joy to their fans.

The two men recently reunited at Nadal’s tennis academy in Mallorca and they’ve followed it up by playing golf together.

The two men were pictured at a Mallorcan golf club as they swapped their racquets for golf clubs in the Spanish heat.
