Fellow tennis player Holger Rune has opened up about just how much Carlos Alcaraz’s Roland Garros prize money he could lose.

El Economista reported that the Spaniard could lose as much as 46% of his cut from winning Roland Garros due to taxation laws.

Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner in a five-set epic after over five and a half hours of play on the Paris clay.

Alcaraz scooped £2.13 million for winning Roland Garros, but he’s set to lose a hefty chunk of that after paying tax.

Current World No. 9 Rune has suggested that Alcaraz could end up paying out more than the touted 46% to the French government.

Holger Rune gives players insight into Carlos Alcaraz’s Roland Garros tax

Many fans were confused about how much Alcaraz would end up paying in tax, and whether he would have to pay the French or Spanish government.

Alcaraz currently resides in Spain, but according to Rune it’s all about where the tournament is played when it comes to paying tax.

“You pay tax of your prize money in the country where you play,” said Rune in response to Tennis Media’s post about Alcaraz having to pay 46% tax on his prize money.

However, here comes the real kicker for Alcaraz – Rune believes the French pay more than Spain in income tax!

“I am sure it’s more than 46% in France, said Rune, before softening the blow for the World No. 2. “You can deduct your expenses,” said the Danish star.

France pays 47% over €300,000, according to SGM Legal Spain, which is a minuscule difference between Spain’s 46% anyway.

Whichever way you look at it, Alcaraz is still walking away from Roland Garros a significantly richer man.

Carlos Alcaraz has already told fans what he’s spending his Roland Garros winnings on

The Spaniard already gave an insight on what he spends his money on after a successful campaign at a Grand Slam.

Speaking to Tennis TV in Paris at Roland Garros, the 22-year-old said: “At the Grand Slams, if I reach the semi-finals, I like to buy myself a new pair of sneakers.”

Following on from that, the star also revealed what he buys for himself if he’s performed well over an entire calendar year.

Alcaraz shared: “If I feel like I had a good season, at the end of the year I’ll buy myself a nice watch.”

The Spaniard is expected to perform at Wimbledon, which begins on June 30. The star won the tournament for the last two years, lifting the trophy in 2023 and 2024.
