Heather Watson was so nervous ahead of her first-round Wimbledon match that she struggled to bite into a banana before beating Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets.

Watson won 6-3 6-2 on Court Three against her Croatian opponent to book her place in the second round, where she will face ninth seed Angelique Kerber.

I always get nervous before I go on, some times more than others

“I have had a good run, and coming to Wimbledon with confidence I really wanted to make the most of it,” said Watson, 22.

“I was a bit nervous going on to court. I struggled to eat before I went on, and actually my jaw was locking and I couldn’t even bite through my banana.

“But it was good. Once I got on court, I got moving. I made sure I moved my feet a lot in the warm-up to get going, and as soon as we started playing, I got into it.

“I always get nervous before I go on, some times more than others, this being one of them. But it’s becoming normal now, so I just get used to it.”
