Charlotte Flair reveals whether John Cena was the right WWE star to break Ric Flair’s iconic record

Charlotte Flair has broken her silence on John Cena toppling her father’s record of 16 World Championships in WWE.

Cena broke the record by defeating Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 in April for the WWE Championship.

Many fans expected Cena to break the record on his WWE retirement tour, and it took him just three matches to break Flair’s record.

Flair’s daughter, Charlotte, has waded into the argument about whether Cena was the right man for the job.

Charlotte Flair says John Cena was ‘the guy’ to break Ric Flair’s record

Flair was magnanimous about WWE’s ‘GOAT’ breaking her father’s World Championship record against Cody Rhodes.

“Records are meant to be broken,” said Flair in an interview with Sports Illustrated about Cena’s WWE Championship victory at WrestleMania 41.

“I don’t wanna speak for my dad, but I think in this case I can, John was the guy to do it,” added the 14-time World Champion.

“And I think he couldn’t be more proud of John. Even me seeing John Cena and what he means to the industry and what he means to me as a performer, I don’t think it was sad,” continued Flair.

The 2025 Royal Rumble winner said, “The record stood the test of time for a very long time, and it was finally broken.”

Flair has the record in her sights herself at 14 World Championships, but she’s currently involved in the tag division alongside Alexa Bliss.

Who else could break John Cena’s 17 World Championships in WWE?

Flair is not the only star who has the chance to reach more World Championships than Cena, with several other stars – young and old – who could reach the target.

Randy Orton is currently on 14 World Championships in WWE and shows no signs of slowing down in his late 40s.

Rollins is currently on five World Championship reigns, with his Money in the Bank briefcase all but guaranteeing another run with the company’s top belt.

Out of the new breed, it looks like Triple H is ready to push Bron Breakker to the moon, while the likes of Gunther and Dominik Mysterio will surely reach at least double figures.
