Five things we learned from WWE and AAA’s Triplemanía as AJ Styles costs Dominik Mysterio the title

WWE’s acquisition of AAA has put plenty more eyes on the product, and their biggest show of the year was testament to that.

Several WWE stars crossed the border for Triplemania as over 17,000 people packed out Arena Mexico for the show.

Three titles changed hands on the night with most of the Mexican company’s top stars having the spotlight shone on them.

Here is five things we learned from WWE and AAA’s Triplemania XXXIII.

Omos returns to win the Copa Bardahl

The show opened with AAA’s version of the Royal Rumble, the Copa Bardahl, as 14 stars vied to win the illustrious match.

Pinfall, submission, and being thrown over the top rope are the only ways to be eliminated as the match-up provided plenty of entertainment in the early going.

WWE stars Joaquin Wilde, Cruz Del Toro, Otis, and Omos appeared as the latter wrestled his first match on a WWE show for over a year.

The Nigerian Giant picked up the win as he continued his dominance in overseas events, following his stint in NOAH in Japan earlier this year.

Pagano and Psycho Clown topple Los Garza

Los Garza headed into the event as the only WWE stars to hold a current AAA Championship, but their reign was stopped at the event.

Pagano and Psycho Clown, two incredibly inventive characters in the Mexican company, teamed together to take back control of the tag division.

The Street Fight offered up some exciting and high-octane spots, and Los Garza garnered excellent heat from the partisan crowd.

Using WWE stars to put over AAA’s own stars is exactly what should be happening in the relationship between the two companies.

El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. wins AAA Latin America Championship

El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. headed into his AAA Latin American Championship match against El Mesias with plenty of history on his back.

El Mesias is a veteran of the game and he previously feuded with Wagner’s father Dr. Wagner Jr in an incredibly legendary rivalry.

El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. was watched on by his father, who even got involved to even the odds against El Mesias’s manager, Dorian Roldan.

Eventually, El Hijo Dr. Wagner Jr. picked up the win for a feel-good moment alongside his legendary father.

Flammer defeats Natalya and Faby Apache

Natalya continued her excellent run outside WWE with a three-way match for the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship.

The WWE star took on champion Flammer and Faby Apache, but came up short against the two AAA stars.

There was a strange narrative heading into this, with Apache unable to overcome a dodgy referee to pick up the win.

Nevertheless, this was a fun match and it’s nice to see Natalya continue to grow into her ‘Nattie Neidhart’ character.

AJ Styles attacks Dominik Mysterio to allow El Hijo del Vikingo to retain AAA Mega Championship

The four-way for the AAA Mega Championship was fun, but it’s hard not to feel like the company is struggling to listen to its fanbase.

Champion El Hijo del Vikingo was overwhelmingly booed by the Arena Mexico crowd, completely contrasting the story they were trying to tell.

AAA was clearly trying to tell the story of its own star overcoming the odds against three WWE stars in the main event.

Instead, Dragon Lee, Dominik Mysterio, and El Grande Americano were treated like babyfaces by the crowd, which completely opposed the story.

Vikingo eventually picked up the win after AJ Styles attacked Mysterio when it looked like he had the match won.
