CM Punk revealed the worst injury he ever suffered inside a wrestling ring during an interview in 2009.

The Best in the World is one of the most popular WWE stars in history, thanks to his two stints in the company between 2005 and 2014 and on his return in 2023.

The WWE icon is a five-time World Champion and is set for one final match with John Cena at Night of Champions on June 28.

During Punk’s first stint in the company, the star revealed gruesome details of his worst injury he’s ever suffered.

CM Punk suffered a fractured skull during an ill-fated wrestling match

Punk is a veteran of the game and has wrestled all over the world for some of the biggest companies in the world.

Speaking to Sky Sports in 2009, the Best in the World revealed that a fractured skull during his time on the independent scene was the worst injury he’s ever had.

The star received it without even realising, after performing a Neckbreaker; a move he uses in nearly every wrestling match.

“It felt like somebody took a pot of warm water and poured it inside my brain,” explained Punk. “Everything got hot, so I thought I broke my neck.”

The star, somewhat unwisely, continued the match for another 12 minutes but felt the effects of the move after the bell rang.

“As soon as I got backstage, I hit the floor and couldn’t get up,” revealed Punk. “I couldn’t open my eyes, I couldn’t see, and I was throwing up.

“I walked into the hospital,” the star continued. ‘They said: ‘The bad news is you have a fractured skull. The good news is you should have died.'”

Despite the severity of the injury, Punk returned to the ring very quickly. “I was out for two months,” said Punk.

CM Punk names his WWE MVP for 2025 so far

Punk has provided support for several of his fellow WWE stars since returning to the company, but one star stands out as his MVP for the year.

The Best in the World has opted for Liv Morgan as the best performer of 2025, following the injury she suffered on WWE Raw on June 16.

“I look at people like Liv who probably started right after I left, 2014-ish,” began Punk at the Fanatics Festival.

“And just from the time I’ve been around her and been able to see her work, just the way she’s developed this last year and just broken out of her shell and turned into this little worker,” he added.

“It kinda warms my heart,” declared Punk. “I missed her the first part of the journey, but to be here, see her grow into who she’s become.”

Morgan suffered a dislocated shoulder and is expected to be missing from WWE for at least the next couple of months.
