John Cena has been pictured with one of his most famous rivals amid his WWE retirement tour, much to the delight of fans.
The 17-time champion has been revealing plenty about his legendary career, with Cena recently naming his ‘toughest’ WWE opponent.
Cena has also faced some of his fiercest rivals in 2025, including Randy Orton, CM Punk, and R-Truth, on his WWE retirement tour.
The star has now been pictured with another star from his past, who inflicted one of his most famous defeats.
John Cena reunites with WWE legend Rob Van Dam at Boston FanExpo
WWE Hall of Famer shared a picture with his former rival Cena at Boston’s FanExpo over the weekend of August 9.
The two men collided in an incredible ECW One Night Stand main event in 2006, which is widely considered one of the best WWE matches of all time.
Van Dam cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase and defeated Cena in ECW’s spiritual home of the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.
Their picture has sparked fans to share their memories of the epic clash, which took place nearly 20 years ago.
“Feels just like yesterday,” said one fan on X. “Audience was NUCLEAR!” Another said: “A classic ECW match and ECW won.”
“Probably to date the most volatile environment he’s ever wrestled in,” said another fan. “If Van Dam lost they probably would’ve stormed the ring and mugged Cena. Epic match though!”
Why RVD was ‘insulted’ by legendary John Cena match
Despite it being arguably his biggest ever moment in wrestling, there is one aspect of his match with Cena that RVD wasn’t happy with.
The star won the WWE Championship after Edge interfered and attacked Cena, which left RVD with a sour taste in his mouth.
“I would have rather just beat him by myself,” said the WWE Hall of Famer. “I felt a little insulted. I just felt like this was another thing where they didn’t trust the ECW or thought that ECW needed some more.”
RVD unfortunately lost his WWE Championship swiftly after defeating Cena, due to failing WWE’s Wellness Policy.
