Keegan Bradley has faced one of the most difficult and scrutinised build-ups to a Ryder Cup for a captain in the competition’s history.
The debate raged for months on end as to whether Bradley would select himself as playing captain. He was placed in an unenviable position as a captain who was playing well enough to rank in the top 12 American players.
Keegan Bradley didn’t pick himself, taking some of the spotlight away, but he still faces a significant challenge as a first-time Ryder Cup captain. Team USA were beaten comfortably in Rome by Europe two years ago, and the Americans need desperately to snatch the trophy from Luke Donald’s hands.
He brings a new-look team to New York with four rookies on the team, and golf journalist Jamie Diaz says that they could present an unexpected problem for Bradley if they play well at Bethpage.

Ryder Cup rookies playing well will force Keegan Bradley into a tough decision
Team USA want a fresh start for the Ryder Cup, hence why they selected Bradley as a captain out of left field. They got their wish with four players new to the competition teeing off at Bethpage Black.
Bradley isn’t short of veteran experience on his team, however. Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa were controversial selections, having shown poor form in 2025. But recent form means nothing at the Ryder Cup, and experience is vital.
Thomas and Morikawa were key components in the USA team that beat Europe 19-9 in 2021. Bradley will still expect big things from the duo. But Diaz believes that Bradley’s biggest challenge will be sidelining them if his rookies play better at Bethpage.
He explained on 5 Clubs, “I think the biggest challenge will be if the veterans start to underperform at the Ryder Cup. Will he have the ability to comfortably tell the veterans, ‘We’re putting in the young guys, I’m sorry.’?
“Keegan isn’t coming from the éminence grise kind of position. He’s a young guy himself, and he’s never really been among the elite. Does he have the psychological stature to go to a guy?
“He’s the captain and I’m sure they’ll honour that, but it’s still an awkward situation. I think he’ll have to step up in terms of saying, ‘I’m in charge here, and I’m going to do the best thing for the team. I’m sorry, I respect everything you’ve done, but I’m going to make this decision.’
“I think that will be hard and awkward, but he’s already done it by telling people they didn’t make the team. It’s part of being a captain, making those hard decisions, but I think it’ll be his biggest challenge.”
Keegan Bradley hasn’t yet had a difficult conversation with a veteran player
When making his captain’s picks, Bradley had to have some tough conversations with players hoping to make the team. Maverick McNealy was devastated not to be picked after ranking in the top 12 in the Ryder Cup standings.
But Bradley said anyone outside the top six cannot expect to be picked, and he stayed true to his word.
It’s telling that Bradley never had to make a call to let down a veteran who expected to make the team. Thomas and Morikawa were both selected; meanwhile, an underperforming Xander Schauffele still managed to qualify automatically.
Veterans from Ryder Cups of years past, such as Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka, had such disastrous years that they could never have realistically expected to make the team. It’s unlikely they got a call from Bradley.
What’s interesting, therefore, is that Bradley still hasn’t had to stand up to a veteran and tell them no. If the rookies step up and play well in foursomes and fourball, then we’ll see if America’s captain can stand up and make the bold call.
