Bryson DeChambeau has revealed that he is working on something that could revolutionise his golf game, and it could be ready in a few weeks.

He had to battle it out at The Open Championship just to make the cut, after DeChambeau struggled in the opening round. He shot 78 on Thursday, but brought himself back to one over with a 65 in round two.

DeChambeau is a true unicorn, who hits the ball harder than anybody we have ever seen. His style of golf gives him difficulties around some golf courses, especially links, but the American said he is working on something that could fix that.

Bryson DeChambeau working on creating a new golf ball to suit his game, ‘I need help out here’

DeChambeau’s issues stem from a lack of control in his approach shots, especially with irons. He lacks finesse and touch when trying to land it on the green, and windy conditions punish his high ball flight.

The Liv Golf and YouTube star, DeChambeau, was spotted using a different golf ball at the range prior to the championship than the one he has used during his rounds. When he was asked about that after his Friday round, DeChambeau revealed he is planning something that could revolutionise his game.

He said, “I’m working with somebody who is going to get me a ball that works better for my speeds. Hopefully there’s some more improvements to be made there. That’s something I hope to complete in the next year.

“I need help out here. I hit it too high. I’ve tried to lower my flight, but I compress down on it really hard and I spin it like crazy, and with my wedges I don’t spin it. It launches high with no spin.

“So I’m working on a few things that will help get that launch down while controlling the spin, so it’s more predictable out of my wedge shots. That’s what I was working on and seeing if there was a more stable ball in windy conditions earlier in the week. There’s not.

“But I’m working with somebody that I’ve already seen improvements with, it’s just not ready to be released. Unfortunately they can’t make enough as quick as they’d like, but it’s coming. Worst case scenario September, but an iteration of it in the next couple weeks.”

That means we could see the first appearance of these balls at the upcoming Ryder Cup.

Golf technology is overtaking the sport

As DeChambeau looks to technological advancements to improve his game, we get further and further from the essence of the sport. Technology is advancing so rapidly that we risk losing the game we know.

Modern drivers hit the ball so far that even courses like the legendary Augusta National are having to make changes to increase distance. Par fives are becoming par fours for players like DeChambeau and 2025 Masters winner Rory McIlroy

If DeChambeau can design his own ball to control his big-hitting, is it not defeating the purpose of the game? Instead of working on his swing to gain more control or learning to hit it softer when he needs more spin, he can just make a ball to fix his problems. That doesn’t seem like the spirit of the game.

If this continues, we risk golf becoming too easy. If we learned anything from the US Open at Oakmont, it is that we want these guys to be challenged. Of course, DeChambeau wants to make life easier. It’s the sport’s job to make it harder for him.
