LeBron James has added fuel to speculation over a move away from the Los Angeles Lakers, with the NBA’s all-time leading scorer posting a cryptic social media update to keep fans guessing.

In recent weeks, James exercised a player option precluding him from entering free agency in 2025.

And while the Lakers made a sweeping move in trading for Luka Doncic back in February, James is said to be keeping tabs on how the front office further bolsters the roster this summer before making commitments.

LA signed center DeAndre Ayton to a two-year deal earlier this week, but more may be needed to keep James where he is, especially if his own subtle messaging is to be believed.

LeBron James adds to offseason intrigue with cryptic ‘Welcome Home’ message

Posting to his Instagram account, James revealed he was “back at it” on the golf course and attached a short video of the course he was playing.

Then, in the next snap, he posted a selfie from the golf cart, revealing his outfit, including a white cap featuring the words “Welcome Home” in black on the front.

The 40-year-old has been with the Lakers since 2018, with the seven-year stint equalling his longest stretch with one franchise, having played for the Cleveland Cavaliers from his drafting in 2003 until a high-profile departure to the Miami Heat in 2010.

With two spells with the Cavs already under his belt – having returned in 2014 before delivering a championship two years later – later-the latest social media post from the four-time MVP sent fans into a frenzy over another potential homecoming.

NBA fans hype up potential Cavs return for LeBron James

LBJ swapped his Cleveland roots for the bright lights of LA in 2018 after guiding the Cavs to four straight NBA Finals, with 2016 bringing the sole success, and the potential to further his legacy has fans purring.

“Lakers send him home,” came a plea from one fan, while another offered: “The Cavs are a loaded team… And LeBron wants another ring…”

“City would go nuts,” came another response, while a fourth said, “I’d be good with LeBron heading back to Cleveland one last time.”

But there was also some opposition to the idea of a third stint for LeBron in The Land, with one fan dismissing the idea altogether.

“He’s never getting another ring, and you’ll [Cavs] end up trading core players and be left with a gutted roster for years to come,” they said.

Whether the Cavs front office can accommodate his $52.6m salary or not remains questionable, but the lure of a swansong in his hometown could yet lead King James back to his original throne.
