Shams Charania has provided a bombshell update on LeBron James, and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer could be on the move.
James recently exercised a player option, placing him under contract with the Lakers for $52.6 million and keeping him from entering free agency in 2025.
However, reports have emerged that the 21-time All-Star has been monitoring the Lakers’ roster moves closely, as winning his fifth NBA title remains at the forefront of his ambition.

ESPN’s Senior NBA Insider Charania provided an update on James’ offseason mindset.
2025 offseason ‘a moment of truth’ for LeBron James and the LA Lakers
James’ eight-year Lakers journey may well be coming to an end, as Charania said on ESPN that he and the Lakers will be having some “tough conversations” in the coming weeks if he is left unconvinced by his team’s offseason moves.
Charania reported that the Lakers are focusing on building around their newly acquired star Luka Doncic, but James, one of the greatest NBA players of all time, will go wherever he feels that he has the best chance to win a championship.
He said, “LeBron James understands and believes that the Lakers are prioritising their long-term future with Luka Doncic, looking at 2027 for max salary spots. LeBron James, at this point in his career, wants to end his career on his terms.
“That means prioritising winning a championship, competing at a high level to win a ring,” continued Charania. “For him, wherever that may be, that is of the utmost importance.
“We know Rob Pelinka, President of the Los Angeles Lakers, is trying to look for a center and trying to replenish their wing depth. Over the next couple of weeks, LeBron is going to be closely monitoring this.”
James’ eight seasons in Los Angeles included him winning the 2020 NBA Championship, making the Western Conference Finals an additional time. James became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in purple and gold, and is a sure bet for a statue outside Crypto.com Arena next to the rest of the Lakers’ legends.
However, the Lakers’ roster seems more than a few minor moves away from being able to compete with the championship-winning OKC Thunder and the rest of the stacked Western Conference.
While the Lakers are the most successful NBA team in the last five decades, it may be time for James to make a move, for the fourth time in his career.
“If winning a championship is his goal, and he wants to end it his way, he’s going to have to start having some tough conversations internally with the Lakers at some point in this offseason,” concluded Charania.
LA Lakers’ stagnant start to free agency
When the doors to free agency swing open, a flurry of moves comes pouring in as teams fight for the best talent in NBA free agency.
Most expected the Lakers, in need of improvement in a number of key positions, to be in the middle of the free agency frenzy to add some presence to their frontcourt.
But their silence was deafening. Their only move was adding a wing in Jake LaRavia for $12 million, not exactly a needle-moving move.
There are still key moves that can be made. The biggest name is Indiana Pacers’ center Myles Turner, who comes off the back of a Finals run with the Pacers. He’s expected to re-sign with Indiana, but he should be top of the Lakers’ targets.
If they fail to make a headline move, whether in free agency or via trade, expect James to attempt to force his way out of the door in search of a ring at the end of his storied career.
