Daniil Medvedev received a $42,500 fine for ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ and ‘racket abuse’ at the US Open.
The Russian star produced a fiery outburst after a photographer wandered onto court between first and second serves in his first round defeat to Benjamin Bonzi.
Medvedev has had an inconsistent 2025 and suffered back-to-back first round Grand Slam defeats at Wimbledon and the US Open.
The World No. 13’s fine is substantial, but it’s far from being the largest dished out by the American Grand Slam tournament.

Serena Williams received the largest fine in US Open history
Medvedev’s fine was more than the $32,500 Nick Kyrgios received for ‘spitting’ and ‘racket abuse in 2022 after he lost his quarter-final to Karen Khachanov.
It was also more than the $17,500 John McEnroe received for his verbal altercation during the US Open in 1987.
However, there’s one star who received a fine far larger than Medvedev’s $42,500 and that’s Serena Williams.
The American legend received a fine of $175,000 in 2009 for verbally abusing a line judge, which saw her receive a match-ending point penalty during her semifinal match against Kim Clijsters.
Other notable fines include Fabio Fognini’s $96,000 for misogynistic insults directed at an umpire during a 2017 match.
Daniil Medvedev expected the huge US Open fine
The large fine won’t be a surprise to Medvedev, who predicted such an affair in his post-match interview at the US Open.
After his loss against Bonzi, the Russian star revealed: “I’m getting a big fine enough, so if I speak, I’m in big trouble, so I’m not going to speak.”
Medvedev was paid $110,000 for his first round appearance at the US Open, so he’s lost more than a third of his prize money to the fine.
This is not the first Grand Slam fine the Russian has faced in 2025, after the star was slapped with a $76,000 fine at the 2025 Australian Open.
