SummerSlam night one under delivered until an incredible main event between CM Punk and Gunther.

A mixture of strange match order and poor performances led to a disappointing SummerSlam until the main event.

CM Punk and Gunther worked in some outrageous professional wrestling psychology as they told their story of David and Goliath.

Here are five things we learned from night one of WWE SummerSlam.

Roman Reigns and Jey Uso vs Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker has the wrong winner

Roman Reigns and Jey Uso’s tag bout against Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker was the right decision for the opener, but the result was absolutely baffling.

Not only did Reed and Breakker lose when a win could have elevated their new partnership, but it was Uso who picked up the win.

It’s understandable that Triple H wouldn’t want Breakker to pick up the loss, but why wouldn’t you give the pin to Reigns?

With Reigns set to leave the company to film Street Fighter, this entire programme has achieved next to nothing.

It’s difficult to see where Reed and Breakker go from here, unless they’re put in the tag division. This felt like a real missed opportunity.

Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss win the WWE tag titles

After a tag opener, Triple H bizarrely decided to book another tag match to follow it with Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss challenging Judgment Day for the tag titles.

The women produced a solid championship match, but the level of the crowd compared to the opener was, unfortunately, noticeable.

Bliss and Flair told their story well, with The Queen overcoming their miscommunication to solidify their tag run.

The pair won the Tag Team Championships after Flair took out Raquel Rodriguez to leave Bliss to hit the Sister Abigail on Roxanne Perez.

Jelly Roll does well in WWE debut against Logan Paul and Drew McIntyre

There was plenty of flak for Jelly Roll’s debut, especially due to Drew McIntyre’s involvement, but the country music star’s debut was a decent display.

The musician proved he has the chops for a solid babyface display and the New Jersey crowd were certainly behind him.

The star wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty either, showcased by him taking a gnarly bump on the commentary table.

Despite his act of bravery, Jelly Roll was eventually pinned by Logan Paul after a Frogslash from the top rope.

Gunther vs CM Punk was incredible

After a middling show with little to get excited about, Punk and Gunther truly brought it in arguably the best WWE match of 2025.

They perfectly sold Punk as the underdog as he constantly looked to battle back against The Ring General’s dominance.

Gunther is a near-perfect heel and his dismantling of the Best in the World was an incredible watch, only bettered by the joy of Punk’s comeback.

It began when the star knocked Gunther off the commentary table, which split the Austrian’s forehead wide open.

Gunther, knocked off balance by the sight of his own blood, was hit by two Go To Sleeps for a dramatic Punk win.

It was joyous – but it only lasted a matter of minutes.

Seth Rollins works us all with Money in the Bank cash in on CM Punk

It was the worst kept secret in wrestling, but Seth Rollins’ Money in the Bank cash in on CM Punk certainly delivered.

Rollins arguably should’ve cashed in on John Cena or Cody Rhodes, but Rollins chucking his crutches to the side to confirm his non-injury was an incredible moment.

Rollins and Punk’s feud continuing isn’t ideal considering their nearly two-year rivalry at this point, but the angle was near perfect in its execution.

The future for this feud isn’t exciting at all, but you can’t deny this was a moment made for WWE’s second biggest show of the year.
