John Cena’s match with Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam was iconic, but there was another incredible plan in place for the match that was scuppered by injury.
Cena and Rhodes’ SummerSlam match earned five stars as the 17-time champion produced the best WWE match of his retirement tour.
Cena reverted back to a babyface before his bout with Rhodes, and he’s expected to stay that way until he retires.
Cena’s retirement tour has been iconic, but the star almost had a major celebrity involved in his SummerSlam match.

Tyrese Haliburton planned John Cena entrance at WWE SummerSlam
Tyrese Haliburton appeared on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive and spoke about potential plans for him to come out with heel Cena at SummerSlam.
Haliburton wanted to come out with the NBA Championships in New Jersey, but his injury and the Indiana Pacers loss to Oklahoma City Thunder scuppered those plans.
“I was like, if Cena’s a heel in New York and we win a championship, let me walk him out with the trophy,” said Haliburton on Impaulsive.
Haliburton said not appearing with Cena for his entrance hurt just as much as his injury and losing the NBA Championships.
“Neck and neck, 1 and 2,” Haliburton said about his injury ruining both of his iconic plans for WWE.
The star did appear in the crowd with Cena, however, as the 17-time champion stole his crutch to attack Rhodes with.
Who will John Cena face for the remainder of his WWE retirement tour?
Two matches for Cena have already been confirmed for the 17-time champion, with the star set to square off against Paul at Clash in Paris and Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza.
That leaves Survivor Series, Crown Jewel: Australia, and Cena’s final WWE appearance at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December for three matches.
Cena is expected to face Gunther in his final match, while fans have called for one final match with AJ Styles.
Cena himself mentioned the likes of The Usos and Jacob Fatu as other opponents during his WWE SmackDown promo in Dublin.
