The Rock’s involvement in John Cena’s heel turn is one of the most shocking WWE moments of all time, but The Great One wasn’t sure on one moment in particular.
Cena attacked Cody Rhodes and shockingly turned heel at the behest of The Rock at Elimination Chamber.
The Rock hasn’t appeared on WWE TV since, leaving fans underwhelmed by the storyline, but The Rock’s feelings on WWE Unreal might explain his absence.
In a conversation with Triple H, The Rock revealed one issue he had with the backstory to Cena’s shocking heel turn.

The Rock was unsure about taking John Cena’s ‘soul’
The storyline leading into Cena’s heel turn was The Rock’s offer to take Rhodes’ soul at Elimination Chamber.
When Cena sided with The Rock, many WWE fans believed the 17-time champion had done the same and were expecting more appearances from The Great One.
The star shared his issues with that aspect of the huge storyline on WWE: Unreal in a conversation with Triple H.

“I don’t think, the whole time, it’s been about me and John,” explained The Rock to The Game. “I don’t think it has anything to do with our souls.”
The Rock added: “I also think what that does, it puts us in a position where then it all becomes unpredictable.”
It appears The Rock was aware of the potential backlash with the storyline, especially as he knew he would not be appearing again for months.
Will The Rock appear at WWE SummerSlam?
With Rhodes and Cena colliding in a WrestleMania 41 rematch at SummerSlam, many fans have predicted a return from The Rock.
However, as things stand, that is not currently the case for The Great One at WWE’s second-biggest show of the year.
BodySlam has reported there are no current plans to bring The Rock back at the show, although they also note plans can change quickly when it comes to the star.
The Rock has only appeared in WWE a handful of times in 2025, including WWE Raw’s Netflix debut and Elimination Chamber.
