Five things we learned from SummerSlam as John Cena and Cody Rhodes put on a classic, and Brock Lesnar returns

Triple H saved the biggest shock of all for the final moments of the second night of SummerSlam.

After Seth Rollins’ shocking cash-in on CM Punk the night prior, The Game had one more trick up his sleeve.

Cody Rhodes and John Cena collided in a terrific main event, but that was overshadowed by Brock Lesnar’s return after two years.

Here are five things we learned from SummerSlam.

Naomi retains the Women’s World Championship, continues Rhea Ripley’s terrible WWE record

Naomi, Rhea Ripley, and Iyo Sky collided in a three-way to open the show, which paralleled the triple threat for the Women’s Championship at WrestleMania 41.

While it didn’t live up to that classic, it was a solid opener which allowed each woman to get the chance to shine.

Naomi eventually won after stealing a win, which is absolutely the right winner. The star has only just won the title, and her work recently deserved a decent run with the belt.

The loss means Ripley has still not won at SummerSlam, and she’s still yet to achieve a victory against Iyo Sky.

The TLC match was predictably brilliant

The Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match for the WWE Tag Team Championships always looked like it had the potential to be match of the night, and it didn’t disappoint.

The six teams put their bodies on the line in a frantic spot-fest for its 16-minute run-time, which saw the Wyatt Sicks retain their belts.

Candice LaRae getting thrown from the top of a ladder into another ladder on the outside and Tommaso Ciampa landing in a stack of tables were the highlights of an incredibly entertaining affair.

The SmackDown tag division deserved this spotlight after stealing the show on Friday nights, and being skipped from the WrestleMania 41 card.

Lyra Valkyria vs Becky Lynch was an overbooked mess

Lyra Valkyria vs Becky Lynch has been one of the highlights of WWE’s programming since the night after WrestleMania 41, but their blow off match failed to impress.

The No DQ match had way too much going on, including Valkyria wrestling most of the match with her hands zip tied.

Bayley was the icing on the cake of the overbooked nonsense, as she attacked Lynch and accidentally hit Valkyria.

Lynch picked up the win, which means Valkyria can no longer challenge her for the belt. This was a huge missed opportunity to crown their next top singles star.

John Cena and Cody Rhodes fix their WrestleMania 41 disaster

John Cena and Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania 41 main event was a dud, and it’s clear that was in the back of their mind when they crafted their SummerSlam bout.

Cena, now a babyface, took a trip down memory lane, as he revisited some of his classics from his two decade WWE career.

The pair brawled everywhere, with a whole host of weapons and huge spots produced in front of a red-hot crowd.

Rhodes eventually picked up the win with a Super Cross Rhodes from the top rope to become a two-time WWE Champion.

It was a 37-minute classic, but it was overshadowed by a huge return that seems wildly out of the blue.

Brock Lesnar returns

After Rhodes lifted Cena’s hand and left him to receive the adulation of the New Jersey crowd, Lesnar’s music shockingly hit.

The star has not been seen since SummerSlam in 2023, and his return seems wildly out of date for WWE’s current programming.

The star attacked Cena with an F5, seemingly setting up one final clash between the pair before the star retires.

Lesnar and Cena is far from exciting in 2025 and this might be one of the most bizarre booking choices Triple H has ever made.
