Brock Lesnar made his shocking return at WWE SummerSlam by attacking John Cena, but it won’t be his first meeting with the 17-time champion.

Lesnar appeared at the end of WWE SummerSlam, hitting Cena with an F5 after his match with Cody Rhodes.

Lesnar’s WWE return is reportedly a Cena decision, which shouldn’t be a surprise as the star has always spoken highly of The Beast.

His reasoning to get squashed by Lesnar at SummerSlam in 2014 tells you all you need to know about his latest WWE return.

John Cena was happy to make Brock Lesnar a star in 2014

Lesnar and Cena locked up at SummerSlam 2014, which is most remembered for The Beast rag-dolling the 17-time champion for the majority of the match.

It spawned the phrase ‘Suplex City’ after Cena was tossed around the ring at will in arguably his most one-sided match.

Cena revealed a conversation with Lesnar ahead of their WWE SummerSlam bout, which saw The Beast conjure up the idea to squash the 17-time champion.

Surprisingly, Cena agreed due to Lesnar recently conquering The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak the same year.

“It’s not my night,” explained Cena about his 2014 SummerSlam bout with Lesnar. How do you showcase the enormity of that win? How do we not waste The Undertaker’s streak?” asked Cena on Notsam.

“If I go out and have a 50-50 match and he just sneaks over, we wasted all that,” the 17-time champion continued.

“But if you take that unbelievable feat with another unbelievable feat, now we’ve passed the energy, and that is how you make someone, and then that someone can make others,” explained Cena.

It’s clear that Cena has always been a huge fan of Lesnar, and it’s no surprise he reportedly requested another match with the star.

When will Brock Lesnar vs John Cena take place?

Lesnar’s return throws a spanner in the works of Cena’s retirement tour, as many fans had already mapped out his final opponents.

Cena only has a few dates left until he retires, including Clash in Paris, Crown Jewel: Australia, and his final date in December 2025.

Lesnar and Cena’s highly-anticipated match could come as soon as Clash in Paris on August 31, with the star only scheduled for 14 more dates in the company.

It’s unclear what Lesnar’s schedule will be, but the star has worked a part-time contract since returning to the company in 2012.
